A whipped tallow balm is rendered beef tallow that has been whipped to fold in air, the way you would whip cream or butter. The result is lighter and fluffier than a solid balm, with a soft, cloud like feel. Ours is a dense yet airy pale ivory, not a glossy white cream and not a hard wax puck. When you scoop a little, it gives way easily and spreads thin.

The base is the same nourishing animal fat people have used on skin for generations. Whipping just makes it easier to apply a small amount evenly, which matters more than most people expect.

Why we whip our tallow balm

We made this balm for ourselves long before it had a name. On our farm we were already rendering tallow from our own grass fed cattle, and the first batches were firm. They worked, but you had to really warm them up, and a little too much left a shine. So we started whipping it. The difference was immediate. The balm went on light, spread further, and sank in without that heavy coating. We now whip every batch by hand and test it on our own family, kids included, before it ever ships.

The whipped texture is a great start, but the ingredients underneath it are what your skin actually feeds on. Here is what we would look for.

• Truly grass fed tallow. The fat quality depends on the animal's diet. 100 percent grass fed tallow carries a better fatty acid and vitamin profile than tallow from grain finished or factory raised cattle.
• A short, honest ingredient list. The best whipped tallow balms do not need fillers, water, or a long botanical cocktail. Ours is 3 ingredients. Fewer ingredients means fewer things to react to.
• An oil that actually sinks in. We use USA sourced emu oil, which penetrates deeper than heavier plant butters and helps the balm absorb fast instead of sitting on top.
• Real nutrients, not just moisture. We fold in rare first colostrum, harvested in the first hours after our cows calve, for the nutrients that later milk does not carry.
• No added fragrance if your skin is fussy. A fragrance free option is safest for sensitive or reactive skin.
